A boundary is not always where a fence tells you it is. Sound crosses a greenhouse, travels beneath a door, and turns a neighbouring room into part of your own. Our habitat notes begin with that simple observation: surroundings matter.
What belongs in a field note
Keep the place, sequence, and your interpretation separate. Write down what happened before the sound, what you heard, and what the room did afterwards. A useful description leaves room for another reader to reach a different conclusion.
Start with a recording
We favour patient notes, sheltered beds, and rooms with windows that open. Our farm is a fictional place built around the familiar barking-spider tradition, with an interest in the spaces people and small creatures share.
Listen to the sample collection and compare the notes. The labels concern the sounds; the stories concern the people who heard them.
